Liverpool FC manager Roy Hodgson holds 'positive' talks with Fernando Torres
Roy Hodgson today confirmed he has held positive talks with Fernando Torres – and again stressed that Liverpool's star striker is not for sale. But the Reds boss admitted he has drawn a blank in attempts to speak to Javier Mascherano. Torres future has been the source of endless speculation for most of this summer and he has been linked with moves to Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City.
However, Hodgson has made it emphatically clear that he does not want to lose the jewel in the Anfield crown and flew to Spain earlier this week to meet Torres before heading out to Liverpool's Swiss training camp.
Hodgson was accompanied by Managing Director Christian Purslow for the talks and he insisted they went cordially with the new World Cup winner.
And though it is clear that Torres will have a decision to make about his future soon, Liverpool's new boss does not intend to let him go without a fight.
“I have met with Fernando,” said Hodgson. “I found him very pleasant. It was a pleasant conversation that took place where he is holidaying after the World Cup.
“As far as we are concerned, Fernando Torres is a Liverpool player. We want him to remain a Liverpool player and he is not for sale.
“We are not welcoming any offers for him because we want to keep him. I left him in the company of our chief executive to come here.
“You would have to speak to Christian Purslow to find out how that particular conversation went. My talk was not that long because I had to get here for the training camp.
“It was purely on football matters – the World Cup, how he did, how his injury is and how much I am looking forward to working with him. That was the summary of that conversation.”
Hodgson, who takes charge of his first game in charge tomorrow night when Liverpool tackle Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal in Austria, also spoke encouragingly about his meeting with skipper Steven Gerrard. The Reds' skipper is due back in training next week – though he won't join up with the squad here in Switzerland – and, as is the case with Torres, Hodgson wants to build a long and successful relationship with Gerrard.
“I though it was a positive meeting,” said Hodgson. “Once again, we are in a situation where we hear that our players are being courted by other teams.
“What we haven't actually had is a club come in to us and say 'we want to buy Steven Gerrard'. As far as I am concerned, Steven is not for sale. I made that clear to him.
